Advocacy Officer – Maternity Cover (AU Focus)

About the role

Save the Children International is seeking an Advocacy Officer on a maternity‑cover basis to strengthen its engagement with the African Union (AU) from its hub in Addis Ababa. The role focuses on advancing children’s rights, especially for children affected by armed conflict, by influencing AU policies and accountability mechanisms.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic engagement with AU bodies, notably the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).
• Collaborate with AU departments such as Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Education to embed child‑protection priorities.
• Support advocacy initiatives that promote implementation and accountability for the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
• Build and maintain partnerships with member states, civil‑society organisations, regional networks and development partners.
• Produce policy briefs, position papers and advocacy materials to inform AU decision‑making.
• Represent Save the Children at AU meetings, conferences and high‑level forums.

Required profile

• Legal right to work in Ethiopia for the contract duration.
• Fluent English (written and spoken).
• Proven experience in advocacy, policy analysis or child‑rights work, preferably within a regional or international setting.
• Knowledge of the AU’s structures and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
• Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.
