Corporate Lawyer – Financial & Cooperative Sector

About the role

We are looking for experienced lawyers to join our head office in Addis Ababa, providing comprehensive legal counsel to Tigat Saving and Credit Cooperative. The role involves safeguarding the cooperative’s interests, ensuring regulatory compliance, and representing the organization in legal proceedings.

Key responsibilities

• Represent the cooperative before Ethiopian courts, administrative tribunals and arbitration panels, preparing pleadings, appeals and managing litigation.
• Lead negotiations, mediations and arbitrations for financial disputes, loan recoveries and contractual disagreements.
• Identify, assess and mitigate legal, operational and financial risks, establishing safeguards for asset protection.
• Draft, review and enforce financial contracts, loan agreements, security deeds and corporate transaction documents.
• Monitor changes in banking, financial, commercial and cooperative legislation to ensure ongoing compliance.
• Provide legal advice to executive management and the Board on high‑stakes transactions and organizational protection.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB); LLM in Business, Commercial or Financial Law is an advantage.
• Minimum four years of experience as a lawyer, legal officer or advocate, preferably in financial institutions, SACCOs, micro‑finance or banking.
• Active attorney licence to practice before Ethiopian courts.
• High integrity, professional ethics and sound judgment.

Required skills

• Expertise in Ethiopian Commercial Law, Contract Law and Financial/Banking Regulations.
• Strong knowledge of cooperative legal frameworks.
• Proven litigation, dispute‑resolution and regulatory‑compliance experience.
• Advanced legal research, drafting and negotiation abilities.
