Mental Health and Psycho‑Social Support Officer

About the role

The Mental Health and Psycho‑Social Support (MHPSS) Officer will plan, coordinate, implement and monitor MHPSS interventions delivered by the Mobile Health and Nutrition Team (MHNT) in selected woredas. Reporting to the MHNT Team Lead, the officer works closely with health, nutrition, protection and community partners to ensure timely, quality, and integrated mental health services for conflict‑affected and vulnerable populations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct mental health and psychosocial assessments, provide Psychological First Aid, basic psychosocial support, psycho‑education, trauma‑healing activities and individual or group counselling as needed.
• Identify and refer individuals with severe mental health conditions, survivors of violence, children at risk or persons with protection concerns to specialised services and follow up on referral outcomes.
• Facilitate protection‑sensitive psychosocial activities for women, children, older persons, persons with disabilities and displaced groups, promoting safety, dignity and social cohesion.
• Support integration of MHPSS into Primary Health Care by strengthening capacity of health workers, mentoring on mhGAP tools, and supervising referral mechanisms.
• Lead community awareness and stigma‑reduction campaigns, encouraging timely help‑seeking and promoting psychosocial well‑being.
• Maintain accurate case documentation, contribute to routine monitoring, reporting and coordination meetings, ensuring compliance with national guidelines, humanitarian principles and donor requirements.
