Climate Data & Forecasting Internship – Eastern Nile

About the role

This internship is part of the Regional Climate Resilience Program (RCRP) for East & Southern Africa. Interns will support climate and weather data collection, processing, and analysis to improve hydrological modelling and flood forecasting in the Eastern Nile sub‑basin.

Key responsibilities

• Compile historical and near‑real‑time weather, satellite and reanalysis datasets (rainfall, temperature, evapotranspiration, river discharge, water level) from sources such as GPM IMERG, CHIRPS, TAMSAT, ARC2, ERA5/ERA5‑Land, GLDAS, GPCC, GHCN and HydroSHEDS.
• Conduct data screening, quality control, gap identification and metadata preparation for climate and hydrological datasets.
• Develop a structured hydrometeorological database for Eastern Nile sub‑basins with clear naming conventions and documentation.
• Assess data gaps, prioritize stations and recommend actions to improve data availability.
• Analyse rainfall and temperature variability, seasonal patterns, anomalies and trends using statistical and geospatial methods.
• Compare observed, satellite‑based and model‑based products to determine suitability for hydrological analysis.
• Prepare visualisations (maps, charts, time‑series plots) and concise technical notes for stakeholders.
• Retrieve and process global/regional numerical weather prediction datasets (e.g., NOAA GFS, WRF) for flood forecasting.
