Public Information Officer – Publishing

About the role

The Public Information Officer (Publishing Officer) will work in the Administration and Conference Management Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa. Reporting to the Chief of the Publications and Conference Management Section and the Chief of Production Services, the incumbent will lead publishing and information programmes that support priority issues and major events.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement publishing strategies, coordinate production efforts and monitor progress for UN publications.
• Analyse trends in publishing, design and digital distribution and advise management on appropriate actions.
• Promote dissemination of UN print, electronic and multimedia publications through outreach plans and partner engagement.
• Oversee end‑to‑end production of publications, including graphic design, layout, typography, infographics, colour management, accessibility compliance and quality assurance.
• Prepare initial drafts of content for UN knowledge products and maintain professional relationships with authors, editors, translators, designers and vendors.
• Guide junior staff, mentor on publishing workflows and ensure data‑driven planning through analysis and reporting.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in publishing, graphic design, visual communication, digital publishing or related field; a first‑level degree with relevant experience may be accepted.
• Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in publication production, graphic design, desktop publishing or digital publishing.
• Demonstrated professionalism, creativity, client orientation and ability to manage performance and mentor staff.
