About the role

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is seeking a Staff Health Officer to lead health‑related activities for its Mekelle delegation and area of responsibility. The role focuses on promoting and protecting the physical and mental well‑being of ICRC staff, ensuring safe living conditions, and coordinating medical support and evacuations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct health briefings for all newly recruited ICRC staff.
• Assess and supervise living conditions, hygiene standards, and nutritional practices across the delegation and sub‑sites.
• Evaluate local medical facilities, monitor service quality, and arrange referrals for staff treatment.
• Provide health advice and support to staff with medical issues and coordinate medical evacuations.
• Liaise with the Staff Health Centre of Expertise at ICRC headquarters and manage repatriation processes.
• Develop and implement staff health policies, including HIV/AIDS programmes and stress management.
• Collect and analyse data on illnesses, accidents, and absenteeism to produce health statistics.
• Review medical invoices for anonymisation and approval.
• Facilitate peer‑support groups and de‑briefings after critical incidents.

Required profile

• Experience in occupational health, public health, or humanitarian health programmes.
• Strong understanding of medical evacuation procedures and health‑risk assessment.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with local clinics, hospitals, and ICRC teams.
• Excellent communication skills in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
