Director, Center for Laboratory Diagnostics and Systems

About the role

The Director of the Center for Laboratory Diagnostics and Systems will provide strategic leadership to strengthen laboratory infrastructure, technologies, and capacity across Africa. Reporting to the Deputy Director General, the role drives continental initiatives that improve disease surveillance, biosafety, and diagnostic capabilities.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement strategic direction for laboratory systems and networks on behalf of Africa CDC.
• Lead development of national laboratory strategic plans, policies, and accreditation programmes.
• Oversee implementation of advanced molecular technologies, biosafety standards, and strain‑bank repositories.
• Guide research, publications, and the translation of scientific findings into programmatic actions.
• Coordinate laboratory support for emergency response activities and represent Africa CDC at regional and international forums.
• Establish partnerships with public‑private entities, universities, and research organisations.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (e.g., PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline.
• Extensive experience in public‑health laboratory leadership and management.
• Proven track record of overseeing large‑scale laboratory programmes and research publications.
