Environmental Specialist – 3‑year Fixed‑term

About the role

The World Bank is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support its Eastern and Southern Africa region. This three‑year fixed‑term position is based in Addis Ababa and focuses on safeguarding environmental and social standards in development projects across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct environmental and social assessments for World Bank‑financed projects.
• Ensure compliance with World Bank Safeguards policies and national regulations.
• Provide technical advice to project teams on mitigation measures and monitoring plans.
• Prepare and review environmental impact statements, risk assessments, and related documentation.
• Engage with government agencies, NGOs, and local communities to facilitate project implementation.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in environmental science, natural resources, or a related field.
• Professional experience in environmental assessment, safeguards, or development projects.
• Familiarity with World Bank environmental and social policies is preferred.
• Strong analytical and report‑writing abilities.
