Geologist (Geophysicist) – Academic & Research Position

About the role

The Department of Geology seeks a qualified Geologist/Geophysicist to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, lead research projects, and support seismic monitoring activities. The position combines classroom instruction with applied field and laboratory work, focusing on the Main Ethiopian Rift system.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver lectures and supervise students in core geology, applied geophysics, and specialized earth‑science topics.
• Conduct research in near‑surface geophysics, electrical resistivity tomography, potential‑field inversion, seismic wavefield modeling, hydrogeological mapping, and mineral exploration.
• Manage earthquake monitoring operations in Southern Ethiopia, including supervision of seismic stations in partnership with the International/Czech Geological Survey.
• Lead technical consultancy projects such as mineral deposit assessments, geotechnical and quarry site evaluations, hydrogeological investigations, and geochemical analyses.
• Participate in departmental governance and coordinate laboratory accreditation, including development of ISO/IEC 17025 standard operating manuals for geophysics and hydrogeology instruments.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in Geology, Geophysics, or a related earth‑science discipline.
• Proven experience in teaching at the university level.
• Demonstrated research record in near‑surface geophysical methods and seismic monitoring.
• Ability to supervise field projects and manage technical consultancy work.
