Internship – Eastern Nile Drought Assessment

About the role

The NCCR Internship focuses on quantifying and monitoring categorical drought trends and their spatial‑temporal distribution in the Eastern Nile Basin, while updating ENTRO’s drought database.

Key responsibilities

• Collect observation (point and remote sensing) and reanalysis data for meteorological, hydrological and agricultural drought assessment from national, regional and global sources.
• Conduct desk review of knowledge products on drought occurrences specific to the Eastern Nile river basin.
• Assess meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural drought indices for the last 20‑30 years.
• Update the drought observation database at ENTRO for the Eastern Nile basin.
• Apply new techniques such as data analysis, development of knowledge products/maps, assist in model development, and prepare reports.
• Organize and compile assessment results for policy makers, stakeholders, and knowledge bases.
• Participate in capacity‑building training, field visits and workshops.

Required profile

• Minimum B.Sc. in Hydrology, Meteorology, Remote Sensing and GIS, Water Resources Engineering, or related fields.
• At least five years of relevant experience after B.Sc.
• Fluency in written and oral English with strong report writing and presentation skills.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams under tight deadlines.
• Must be under 35 years of age and a citizen of an Eastern Nile basin country (Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan).
• Female candidates are highly encouraged; previous ENTRO interns cannot apply.

Required skills

• Knowledge of drought assessment models and tools (advantage).
• Programming in R (preferred) and/or water‑resources data analysis tools.
• GIS, spatial analysis, and statistical analysis tools.
