Principal Backend Development Officer

About the role

We are looking for a Principal Backend Development Officer to lead the design and implementation of robust backend solutions for our core banking and digital channels. You will shape the technical direction, mentor the development team, and ensure that our systems remain scalable, secure, and maintainable.

Key responsibilities

• Lead backend architecture and technical design for complex features, delivering scalable and maintainable solutions.
• Guide the backend team on best practices, conduct design reviews, and foster technical growth.
• Design and implement integrations between core banking, digital channels, payment switches, and partner platforms while maintaining security and performance.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex distributed system issues, applying performance analysis and root‑cause investigation.
• Drive continuous improvement of development processes, tooling, and code quality.
• Represent the backend perspective in architecture reviews and cross‑functional planning sessions.

Required profile

• First degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• At least 6 years of relevant backend development experience.
• Strong analytical skills with a focus on delivering high‑quality, reliable systems.

Required skills

• Expert‑level proficiency in Java (version 17+) and modern language features.
• Extensive hands‑on experience with Spring Boot, including Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security, and Spring Cloud/microservices patterns.
• Deep understanding of RESTful API design, versioning, and secure API‑gateway integration.
• Experience with BPMN engines such as Camunda or Activiti, or custom process orchestration.
• Solid grasp of microservices architecture, service decomposition, inter‑service communication (REST, gRPC, messaging), circuit breakers, and resilience patterns.
• Proven experience building USSD integrations and Internet Banking backends, including secure transaction processing and multi‑factor authentication.
• Practical knowledge of supporting Flutter‑based mobile app backends and designing mobile‑focused APIs.
