Consultant on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) for African countries

About the role

The United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) is seeking a consultant to lead a research study on the implementation of UNSCR 1325 – Women, Peace and Security – in Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The assignment will support the Office of the Special Envoy of the African Union Chairperson on Women, Peace and Security (OSE‑WPS) in documenting progress, challenges and lessons learned over the past 25 years.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute a systematic data‑collection plan covering government sources, civil society and community‑level inputs.
• Conduct qualitative fieldwork, including focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs).
• Analyse data against the African Union Continental Results Framework and the four pillars of UNSCR 1325 (participation, protection, prevention, recovery).
• Prepare a draft analytical report by week six and a final revised report incorporating stakeholder feedback by week eight.
• Provide actionable recommendations to strengthen accountability and accelerate WPS implementation.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in gender, peace and security research, preferably within the African context.
• Familiarity with UNSCR 1325, National Action Plans and related WPS frameworks.
• Ability to work independently under the supervision of UNOAU WPS teams and deliver high‑quality analytical outputs on tight timelines.

Required skills

• Qualitative research methods (FGDs, KIIs).
• Data analysis and synthesis for policy‑oriented reporting.
