Market System Development Officer – EMPOWER Project

About the role

People in Need is looking for a Market System Development Officer to join the EMPOWER project in Yabelo, Ethiopia. The officer will translate strategic guidance into concrete field actions, supporting SMEs, VSLAs, SACCOs and financial institutions to improve market access and livelihoods for youth and women.

Key responsibilities

• Implement the Market Systems Development approach on the ground, supporting SME rollout and market access facilitation.
• Engage with local private‑sector actors, financial institutions and community groups to foster partnerships.
• Facilitate employability skills development, entrepreneurship training and private‑sector linkage activities.
• Monitor and report on project activities, ensuring alignment with the EMPOWER project objectives.
• Travel to project sites across Borena and West Guji zones as required.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in market systems development, private‑sector engagement or rural livelihood programmes.
• Strong understanding of SME development, financial services for low‑income groups and climate‑resilient markets.
• Ability to work independently in a dynamic, pastoral context and travel frequently.
