Principal Business Analyst – African Pooled Procurement Mechanism

About the role

The African Pooled Procurement Mechanism (APPM) seeks a Principal Business Analyst to provide high‑level analytical support for its mission of improving access to affordable, quality‑assured health products across Africa. Based in Addis Ababa, you will work closely with the APPM Director and the African Market Shaping Council, delivering evidence‑based advice that shapes procurement strategies, financing tools, and market‑shaping interventions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic, economic and market analyses that underpin the APPM business model.
• Provide senior‑level analytical advice on procurement strategies, financing mechanisms and market‑shaping tools to APPM leadership and governance bodies.
• Generate market intelligence reports from APPM datasets, presenting clear options and recommendations for decision‑making.
• Contribute to the design of market‑shaping interventions such as target‑price negotiations, volume commitments, and innovative financing instruments (e.g., volume guarantees, advance financing).
• Model procurement and financing scenarios to support adoption of innovative instruments that enhance the APPM business model.
• Identify structural barriers to access, including pricing dynamics, supply concentration, financing gaps and regulatory failures.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in economics, public health, business administration or a related field.
• Extensive experience in strategic analysis, market intelligence and health‑sector procurement.
• Proven ability to translate complex data into actionable policy recommendations.
• Strong understanding of African health markets, including vaccines, diagnostics, therapeutics and essential commodities.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting findings to senior stakeholders.
