WASH and Shelter Project Manager - Gonder

About the role

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is seeking an experienced, results-driven WASH and Shelter Project Manager for its Gonder Area Office in Ethiopia. The role leads the design, implementation, monitoring and delivery of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) and shelter interventions for crisis-affected communities, working with authorities, donors, partners and humanitarian coordination platforms.

This opportunity is open to Ethiopian nationals only. The contract is 12 months, with travel of up to 80% and a grade 8 position on NRC's resident salary scale.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the project cycle from needs assessments and response design through proposal development, budgeting, implementation, monitoring and reporting.
• Ensure interventions meet high standards of quality, safety, appropriateness and sustainability, with strong financial oversight and accountability.
• Manage and mentor project teams, strengthen staff capacity and foster community engagement and participation.
• Contribute to resource mobilisation, programme development and strategic engagement.
• Integrate protection principles, gender, age and disability inclusion, environmental sustainability and disaster risk reduction into WASH and shelter responses.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years' experience in a senior-level project implementation role, preferably in a humanitarian or recovery context.
• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, water resources, hydraulic, environmental, water supply and sanitation or construction engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Experience in complex and volatile contexts, and in shelter and WASH programming in a refugee context.
• Experience in donor engagement.
• Fluent English, written and spoken.
• Knowledge of the WASH, shelter and housing sectors and their stakeholders in Ethiopia.
• Familiarity with WASH and shelter sector standards across contexts and target groups.
