About the role
The Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Specialist will lead the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of HSE programs for MAXAM's explosives and blasting operations at the Allied Gold mine site. This role ensures compliance with company standards, client requirements and all legal and regulatory obligations related to the safe handling of explosives.
Key responsibilities
- Implement and monitor MAXAM's HSE management systems at the Allied Gold project site.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, Allied Gold requirements and applicable legal standards governing explosives and blasting.
- Conduct HSE inspections, audits, hazard identification and risk assessments for storage, transportation, charging and blasting activities.
- Promote safe work practices, including permit‑to‑work systems, PPE compliance and critical safety controls.
- Investigate incidents, near‑misses and environmental events and drive timely corrective actions.
- Deliver HSE inductions, training programs, toolbox talks and safety awareness initiatives for employees and contractors.
- Monitor environmental aspects of blasting such as vibration, air over‑pressure, dust, noise and fly‑rock and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Support emergency preparedness and response for explosives‑related incidents, fires and other site emergencies.
- Act as the primary HSE liaison between MAXAM and Allied Gold, participating in client meetings, inspections and performance reviews.
- Prepare and maintain HSE reports, records, statistics and compliance documentation.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of HSE experience in mining, explosives, construction or heavy industry.
- At least 3 years of direct experience in explosives, blasting or mining contractor operations.
- Experience working under a contractor‑client operating model and interfacing with mine‑owner HSE teams.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
Required skills
- HSE inspections, audits and risk assessments for explosives handling.
- Incident investigation and corrective‑action implementation.
- Environmental monitoring (vibration, air over‑pressure, dust, noise, fly‑rock).
- Permit‑to‑work system management and PPE compliance.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
- Explosives handling and blasting safety procedures.
- NEBOSH certification (preferred).
