Meteorologist – Climate Research & Drought Early Warning

About the role

The Climate Hazards Center is seeking a full‑time Meteorologist to join its Hawassa office. You will work on cutting‑edge climate research, focusing on drought early warning, severe weather forecasting, and ocean‑atmosphere interactions.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, process, and quality‑control meteorological and oceanographic data from diverse sources.
• Analyse large‑scale weather patterns and produce detailed weather and climate reports.
• Support research projects aimed at improving drought early‑warning systems and climate predictions.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners such as USGS, NASA, NOAA, and USDA.
• Disseminate findings to stakeholders through presentations, publications, and briefings.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or higher in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climatology, or a related field.
• Strong expertise in meteorology and severe‑weather analysis.
• Knowledge of oceanography and climatology processes.
• Understanding of physics principles applied to atmospheric and climate systems.
• Excellent analytical abilities and experience interpreting large‑scale meteorological datasets.
• Proven communication and teamwork skills for multidisciplinary collaboration.

Required skills

• Proficiency in meteorological and climate modeling software.
• Advanced data‑analysis techniques for weather and climate datasets.
• Ability to prepare clear, concise technical reports and visualisations.
