Deputy Country Director for Ethiopia

About the role

The Deputy Country Director (Programmes) will support the Country Director in leading People in Need’s humanitarian and development portfolio in Ethiopia. Based in Addis Ababa, the role provides strategic direction, ensures programme quality and compliance, and represents the organisation with national authorities, donors and partners.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the strategic agenda for the Relief and Development Department, aligning programmes with national and international priorities.
• Ensure the relevance, quality and compliance of all programmes, supervising design and implementation together with Programme Managers and Advisors.
• Develop and maintain relationships with donors, government authorities, civil‑society partners and coordination platforms.
• Identify new funding opportunities and partnerships, contributing to the country’s fundraising strategy.
• Manage programme‑related risks and oversee human‑resource planning and staff development within the programme unit.
• Act as the legal representative of People in Need in Ethiopia in the absence of the Country Director.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in humanitarian or development programmes, preferably at country level.
• Strong external engagement skills with donors, government and civil‑society stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to manage programme risk, compliance and quality assurance.
• Experience supervising multidisciplinary teams and overseeing HR and staff development.
• Capacity to represent the organisation in policy dialogue and coordination mechanisms.
