Eastern Nile Drought Assessment Internship

About the role

The Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO) is seeking an intern to support the 10th NCCR Internship Batch focused on drought assessment in the Eastern Nile Basin. The role involves data collection, analysis, and the preparation of knowledge products to inform policy and decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Collect point‑based and remote‑sensing observation data, as well as reanalysis data for meteorological, hydrological and agricultural drought assessment.
• Conduct a desk review of existing drought knowledge products specific to the Eastern Nile River basin.
• Assess drought indices for the past 20‑30 years and update ENTRO’s drought observation database.
• Apply new techniques such as data analysis, map development, model assistance, and report preparation.
• Organise and compile assessment results for stakeholders, policy makers and the knowledge base.
• Participate in capacity‑building trainings, field visits and workshops.
• Perform other duties as required.

Required profile

• Minimum B.Sc. in Hydrology, Meteorology, Remote Sensing, GIS, Water Resources Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, River Basin Management or related fields.
• At least five (5) years of relevant experience after the B.Sc.; MSc or higher is an advantage.
• Knowledge of drought assessment models and tools is a plus.
• Fluency in written and spoken English with strong report‑writing and graphical presentation skills.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams under tight deadlines.
