Senior Education Consultant – Foundational Learning (10.5 months)

About the role

The Senior Education Consultant, Foundational Learning, will act as the project officer for the Gates Foundation grant on Education Advocacy in Africa, supporting the African Union Commission’s Department of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI). Based in Addis Ababa, the consultant will help operationalise foundational learning within the Continental Education Strategy for Africa 2026‑2035 and guide AU Member States in investing in foundational literacy and numeracy.

Key responsibilities

• Support and advance implementation of the Education Advocacy in Africa project.
• Lead the ELPAf campaign and ensure its alignment with AU priorities.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to Member States on foundational literacy and numeracy coordination.
• Represent ESTI in relevant forums and maintain liaison with UNICEF, UNECA and other partners.
• Ensure activities comply with statutory processes and promote long‑term sustainability.

Required profile

• Master’s degree with a specialization in Foundational Learning, Economics, Social Sciences or a related field.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in education policy and programme planning at a continental or regional level.
• Demonstrated teaching experience.
• Professional experience with international organisations operating in Africa.
