Soil Survey and Research Officer

About the role

The University seeks a full‑time Soil Survey and Research Officer to join its agricultural research team in Harar. The role combines field work, laboratory analysis and support for teaching and community outreach on soil health and sustainable land management.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and conduct soil surveys and field experiments across Harar and surrounding areas.
• Collect, prepare and analyse soil samples using basic chemical and physical laboratory methods.
• Maintain accurate records, ensure safe equipment use and manage data sets.
• Prepare technical reports, teaching materials and extension outputs for students and farming communities.
• Collaborate with academic staff on research projects and contribute to curriculum development.
• Participate in community training and outreach activities related to sustainable soil and land use.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science or a closely related field.
• Strong knowledge of soil classification, fertility, chemistry and conservation.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and adapt to field and campus environments.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills, with interest in teaching and mentoring.

Required skills

• Soil sampling and sample preparation.
• Basic chemical analysis of soils.
• Use of GIS for land assessment (preferred).
• Basic statistics and data interpretation.
• Operation of standard laboratory equipment.
