Chief of Section, Economic Affairs

About the role

The Economic Commission for Africa is seeking a senior professional to lead the Section on Economic Affairs within the Climate Change, Food Security and Natural Resources Division. Reporting to the Division Director, the incumbent will shape policy and oversee programme implementation related to natural resources governance and agri‑food system transformation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic policy guidance to the Director on natural resources and agri‑food system initiatives.
• Plan, coordinate and monitor the Section’s activities, ensuring timely delivery of work programmes.
• Supervise staff and manage the Section’s work plan, budgets and reporting mechanisms.
• Prepare position papers and reports for intergovernmental bodies such as the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly.
• Collaborate with UN agencies, donors and partner organisations to align projects and secure resources.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in economics, environmental studies, public policy or a related field.
• Extensive experience in macro‑economic policy, natural resources management or food‑security programmes.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex projects.
• Strong analytical and writing skills for high‑level policy documents.
