Eastern Nile Drought Assessment Internship

About the role

The internship focuses on quantifying and monitoring categorical drought trends across the Eastern Nile Basin, updating the ENTRO drought observation database, and producing knowledge products for policy makers and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Collect point‑based and remote‑sensing observation data, as well as reanalysis datasets for meteorological, hydrological and agricultural drought assessment.
• Conduct desk reviews of existing drought knowledge products specific to the Eastern Nile River basin.
• Assess drought indices for the past 20‑30 years and update the basin‑wide drought database.
• Apply new techniques such as data analysis, map development, model assistance, and report preparation.
• Organise and compile assessment results for presentation to decision‑makers, stakeholders and the ENTRO knowledge base.
• Participate in capacity‑building trainings, field visits and workshops.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Minimum B.Sc. in Hydrology, Meteorology, Remote Sensing, GIS, Water Resources Engineering or related fields.
• At least five years of relevant experience after the B.Sc.; MSc or higher is an advantage.
• Knowledge of drought assessment models and tools; proficiency in R programming and GIS.
• Fluent written and oral English, strong report writing and graphical presentation skills.
• Must be under 35 years of age, a citizen of Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan or Sudan, and not a previous ENTRO intern.
