Environmental Health Officer

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking an Environmental Health Officer to lead rapid environmental health assessments and emergency WASH responses in Harar, East Hararge Zone, Oromia Region. Reporting to the Senior HP Officer, you will support the design, implementation, and monitoring of water and sanitation interventions for vulnerable populations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct rapid and detailed environmental health need assessments.
• Identify, design, and rehabilitate water supply schemes (boreholes, shallow wells, rainwater harvesting).
• Prepare engineering designs, bills of quantities, and budget estimates for emergency projects.
• Develop clear specifications for procurement and ensure compliance.
• Source, monitor, and manage labor and contractors for WASH interventions.
• Coordinate with local water, health, and government offices to ensure integrated responses.
• Monitor water trucking operations, water quality, and chlorine residuals at source, distribution, and consumption points.
• Produce progress reports, monthly emergency updates, and technical documentation.

Required profile

• Experience in humanitarian WASH or environmental health projects.
• Ability to work independently in remote, emergency settings.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills.
• Excellent collaboration with government partners and NGOs.

Required skills
