Livelihood and Food Security Officer

About the role

The IRC is implementing an Irish Aid-funded BRIDGE project in East Hararghe (Chinaksen and Gursum) and Gambella (Itang and Lare) woredas, Ethiopia, aimed at improving food security and resilience of vulnerable populations against shocks and stress. The Livelihood and Food Security Officer plans, implements, coordinates, monitors and reports on livelihood, food security and climate resilience interventions, supporting households, smallholder farmers, pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, women, youth, SMEs and cooperatives. The officer works closely with government extension services, community structures, implementing partners and other stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Project Manager in planning and implementing activities in line with the work plan, budget and technical approach; prepare activity plans, schedules and field plans, conduct field visits and coordinate with local government offices.
• Integrate gender equality, social inclusion, climate resilience and environmental sustainability into all interventions.
• Crop production: assess barriers to food production, select target households, train farmers on climate-smart practices, strengthen Farmer Training Centres, promote keyhole gardening and access to climate-resilient seeds and inputs.
• Livestock, pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihoods: train on husbandry, animal health, feed and fodder, breeding and business opportunities, and coordinate with government livestock and veterinary services.
• Sustainable land and water management: train on soil and water conservation, tree planting and land rehabilitation, promote micro-irrigation, strengthen Irrigation Water Users Organizations and monitor irrigation schemes.
• Promote livelihood diversification, green enterprises, savings and financial inclusion, market linkages and anticipatory action.
