Livelihood and Food Security Officer

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hiring a Livelihood and Food Security Officer in Gambella, Ethiopia, to support its Irish Aid-funded BRIDGE project. The project aims to improve food security and resilience of vulnerable populations against shocks and stress in the intervention areas. The officer plans, implements, coordinates, monitors and reports on livelihood, food security and climate resilience interventions, and provides technical and field-level support to vulnerable households, smallholder farmers, pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, women, youth, SMEs and cooperatives.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Project Manager in planning and implementing activities in line with the work plan, budget and technical approach, and develop detailed activity plans and field schedules
• Conduct regular field visits to monitor implementation, give technical guidance and fix problems
• Ensure activities reach targeted households according to beneficiary selection criteria, and integrate gender equality, social inclusion and climate resilience into all interventions
• Coordinate with local government offices, community structures, implementing partners, cooperatives and other stakeholders
• Crop production: assess barriers to food production, train farmers on climate-smart practices, strengthen lead farmer approaches and Farmer Training Centres, and support access to climate-resilient seeds and inputs
• Livestock: train pastoralists and agro-pastoralists on husbandry, animal health, feed and breeding, and promote livelihood diversification
• Land and water: train communities on sustainable land and water management, promote soil and water conservation, and support micro-irrigation and Irrigation Water Users Organizations
