Subregional Coordinator for Eastern Africa

About the role

The Subregional Coordinator for Eastern Africa serves as FAO’s principal representative in the sub‑region, overseeing the implementation of FAO’s strategic agenda across eight countries. Based in Addis Ababa, the role links FAO headquarters, the Regional Office for Africa, and key regional bodies such as the African Union and UNECA.

Key responsibilities

• Lead multidisciplinary technical teams to design, plan and execute agrifood system transformation projects.
• Develop, promote and oversee sub‑regional strategies aligned with the FAO Strategic Framework 2022‑31 and regional priorities.
• Represent FAO to the African Union, UNECA and the Ethiopian government, fostering partnerships and advocacy.
• Coordinate with the FAO Regional Representative and contribute to the UN Development Group (UNDG) team on strategic planning, budgeting and performance monitoring.
• Ensure effective monitoring, reporting and accountability for all FAO activities in the sub‑region.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in agriculture, food security, rural development or related sectors within an international or UN context.
• Proven leadership of multidisciplinary teams and experience managing large‑scale development programmes.
• Strong diplomatic and stakeholder‑engagement skills, with a track record of working with governments and regional organisations.
• Deep understanding of FAO’s strategic objectives and the development landscape in Eastern Africa.
