Chief of Section, Economic Affairs

About the role

The Economic Commission for Africa is seeking a senior professional to lead the African Climate Policy Section within its Climate Change, Food Security and Natural Resources Division. Reporting to the Division Director, the Chief will shape policy, coordinate programmes and represent the Commission in high‑level inter‑governmental forums.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic policy guidance on climate change, climate resilience and related macro‑economic issues.
• Oversee planning, implementation and monitoring of the Section’s work programmes, ensuring timely delivery of results.
• Coordinate diverse projects and liaise with UN agencies, donors and partner organisations.
• Supervise staff, manage resources and ensure compliance with internal procedures.
• Prepare position papers, reports and briefing notes for bodies such as the Economic and Social Council, the General Assembly and other policy‑making organs.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in climate policy, economic diversification or related fields at an international or governmental level.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex programmes.
• Strong analytical and writing skills for high‑level policy documents.
• Excellent coordination and stakeholder‑engagement capabilities across UN systems and donor agencies.
