Data Scientist – GenAI & LLM Specialist

About the role

Girl Effect is seeking a Data Scientist with deep expertise in Generative AI and Large Language Models to advance its chatbot platforms that serve adolescent girls across Africa and Asia. You will help design, build, and scale safe, AI‑driven conversational pathways that support health, education, and wellbeing.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Python‑based services that integrate GPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google) and Claude (Anthropic) into real‑time chatbot experiences.
• Design and operate custom Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines on Azure, ensuring low latency and high reliability.
• Implement and continuously improve strict safety guardrails and evaluation metrics to protect vulnerable youth.
• Collaborate with behavioral scientists, mental‑health experts, and safeguarding teams to align AI outputs with impact goals.
• Lead the expansion of multilingual support for South Africa, Kenya, and India, handling mixed‑code language inputs.

Required profile

• Post‑graduate degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Proven hands‑on experience building production‑grade GenAI/LLM solutions.
• Strong commitment to user safety and responsible AI practices.
• Excellent communicator who can bridge technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
