Midwifery Nurse (MHNT) – Afdem, Ethiopia

About the role

The role provides essential support to Save the Children’s emergency programmes in Afar, promoting accountability to beneficiaries and empowering communities. The incumbent works closely with the MEAL Coordinator and project staff to establish accountability mechanisms.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and facilitate implementation of mobile health and nutrition activities, site selection and prepare weekly movement plan.
• Provide basic health and nutrition services including community ANC, FP, IMNCI/ICCM, safe motherhood, emergency services, referral, health education and EPI as per MOH guidelines.
• Facilitate essential drugs, supplies and therapeutic products for the team and selected health facilities.
• Facilitate training and work closely with MOH staff at health posts, health centres, hospitals and district level.
• Organise daily, weekly and monthly reports of ANC, FP & EPI, health education and consultations, ensuring referral systems and linkage with health facilities.
• Provide onsite training to HEW and nurses and ensure job aids are available in health posts.
• Receive weekly reports from HEW, cross‑check completeness and accuracy and submit to Woreda Project officers.
• Mentor and assist HEW in decisions for patients at severe risk and arrange transfers to nearby hospitals.
• Participate in capacity‑building training, health‑education sessions and ENA/BCC application.
• Follow up absentees/defaulters and maintain current records of beneficiaries and staff.

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor degree in Midwifery.
• Minimum three years of work experience, with at least two years in maternal and child health (MCH) programmes.
• Experience in clinical settings, especially maternal and child health.

Required skills

• Provision of antenatal care (ANC) and family planning services.
• Implementation of IMNCI/ICCM and Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI).
• Clinical management of safe motherhood and emergency maternal health services.
