Regional Director, Africa

About the role

The Regional Director, Africa leads the United Nations Development Coordination Office’s (UNDCO) regional interface, reporting to the Assistant Secretary‑General. Based in Addis Ababa, the role supports the Resident Coordinator system across Africa, ensuring coherent, data‑driven implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic, field‑facing support to Resident Coordinators and regional offices.
• Lead DCO’s regional coordination, fostering horizontal collaboration across the UN Development System.
• Convene partnerships and drive sustainable‑development thought leadership for SDG impact.
• Collaborate with Regional Economic Commissions and regional platforms for integration.
• Promote UN 2.0 approaches anchored in data, digital innovation, behavioral science and strategic foresight.
• Represent DCO in regional mechanisms and ensure timely, high‑quality delivery of the mandate.
• Oversee the regional office’s operations and staff performance.

Required profile

• Senior development practitioner with extensive experience in UN or multilateral coordination.
• Proven leadership and strategic analysis capabilities.
• Deep understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN 2.0 transformation.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across governments, UN agencies and partners.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and partnership‑building skills.
