Heavy Vehicle Driver

About the role

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is recruiting a Heavy Vehicles Driver in Mekele, Ethiopia. The driver transports goods and people safely and on time, in line with ICRC rules and national traffic laws. The position is open to Ethiopian nationals only, is full-time, and is a one-year fixed-term contract subject to extension.

Key responsibilities

• Drive trucks and other vehicles in strict adherence to internal security rules and national traffic laws, monitoring road security constantly.
• Be accountable for the cargo from signing the waybill to delivery, and load and unload the truck or supervise loading and unloading.
• Store goods according to local, international and ICRC safety standards, check the vehicle's equipment and keep it fuelled and clean.
• Report accidents, defects and missing equipment immediately, and act as convoy leader when required.
• Inform the car dispatcher of departure and return times, park the truck safely, and follow security rules and traffic regulations.
• Refuel the truck in time, record refuelling data in the logbook and hand over fuel bills to the dispatcher.
• Confirm quantities against documentation at loading and unloading, and report road conditions and accidents to the dispatcher.
• Check the vehicle weekly and on handover, change a tyre or bulb on the road, and report needed maintenance in advance.

Required profile

• Secondary school diploma.
• Driving licence at minimum category 5th grade or DEREK 3, with a licence to pull 40-MT trailers (C1E).
• Minimum two years of experience as a truck driver.
• Good knowledge of the security situation and terrain in the area of assignment.
• Ability to change a tyre and carry out minor repairs such as changing light bulbs.
• Flexibility to work irregular schedules and a helpful attitude.
