Heavy Vehicle Driver (Mekele)

About the role

The ICRC is hiring a Heavy Vehicles Driver in Mekele, Ethiopia, to transport goods and people safely and on time, in line with ICRC rules and national traffic laws. The position is open to Ethiopian nationals only, is full-time, and is a one-year fixed-term contract subject to extension depending on performance and budget.

Key responsibilities

• Drive trucks and other vehicles following internal security rules and national traffic laws, monitoring road security constantly
• Be accountable for the cargo from waybill signing to delivery, and load and unload or supervise loading and unloading
• Store goods according to local, international and ICRC safety standards, and check the vehicle's equipment, fuel and cleanliness
• Check that trips are authorised, report accidents, defects and missing equipment, and act as convoy leader when needed
• Inform the car dispatcher of departure and return times, park safely, and follow security rules and radio procedures
• Refuel the truck in time, log refuelling data and hand over fuel bills to the dispatcher
• Confirm quantities against documentation at loading and unloading, and report road conditions and accidents to the dispatcher
• Check the vehicle on handover and weekly, change a tyre or bulb on the road, and report maintenance needs in advance
• Replace another driver when absent, perform other tasks requested by the supervisor, and act as translator/FO for the delegate when required

Required profile

• Secondary school diploma
• Driving licence and licence to pull 40-MT trailers (C1E)
• Minimum two years' experience as a truck driver
• Good knowledge of the security situation and terrain in the area of assignment
• Ability to change a tyre and carry out minor repairs such as changing light bulbs
• Basic spoken and written English and proficiency in Tigrigna (spoken and written)
• Willingness to work irregular schedules and a helpful attitude
