Unit Manager - Packaging

About the role

The Unit Manager ensures optimum use of plant, raw materials and people so that quality product is produced at minimum cost, meeting customer requirements and complying with legislation. The role covers packaged volumes, product quality, productivity and team management.

Key responsibilities

• Packaged volumes: make sure packed volumes by brand and pack match the plan, supply the full beer to the warehouse and agree on stock numbers, and maintain or increase daily packed volumes according to the plan and factory efficiency standards.
• Quality: control the packaging process so quality standards are kept, take corrective action against substandard product and reinforce continuous improvement.
• Productivity: achieve and improve targets such as hl per man hour, % GLY and hl per factory hour, % LEF and hl per machine hour; control fixed costs, beer loss and container loss.
• Plan and prepare materials, machine maintenance and subordinate deployment, motivate and manage human resources including performance appraisals, discipline, training and IR climate, and recruit, select and appoint staff.
• Comply with safety standards and statutory requirements, keep the packaging line clean and tidy, report on efficiencies, downtime and other production issues, and set and monitor team and individual goals.

Required profile

• BSc Engineering or B.Tech Mechanical / Electrical, plus a Packaging Traineeship (in-house).
• Packaging experience with high-speed plant and equipment.
• Ability to work shifts and to work outside normal working hours.
• Good understanding of OHS and NOSA requirements.
• Good verbal, sight and hearing abilities.
