Civil Engineer – Site Supervisor for School Construction Project

About the role

The Civil Engineer will be based in Gazanche, Ethiopia, acting as the site supervisor and technical focal point for the construction of a new primary school infrastructure. The role ensures that all works follow approved designs, technical specifications, quality and safety standards, and are delivered on schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise daily construction activities for classrooms, administration, library, sanitation facilities, fencing, walkways, drainage, landscaping and solar power installations.
• Monitor construction progress, verify completed works against design drawings and specifications, and maintain accurate site documentation.
• Support contractor payment certification by preparing and reviewing progress reports and invoices.
• Coordinate with local authorities, school leadership, contractors and community stakeholders to facilitate smooth implementation.
• Ensure compliance with UNOPS quality, safety and accountability standards through regular inspections and reporting.

Required profile

• University degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Proven experience supervising construction sites, preferably in education or community infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with design and safety standards, building codes and quality control procedures.
• Ability to work in remote, rural environments and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of local language is an advantage.
